Interdisciplinary Science Initiatives

Introduction

This document outlines Air University’s commitment to interdisciplinary science research and presents key institutional measures, infrastructure, support systems, and recognition frameworks that enable collaborative, cross-disciplinary work. As a federally chartered public sector university, Air University integrates advanced research in aerospace, avionics, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, engineering, and applied sciences. By promoting joint projects, shared facilities, and qualitative evaluation of interdisciplinary impact in faculty appointments and promotions, the institution seeks to drive innovation, build capacity for solving real-world problems, and contribute meaningfully to Pakistan’s knowledge economy and strategic priorities.

Funding and Grants:-

Specific monetary values are maintained internally by ORIC and QEC (as per institutional policy). Verifiable examples of secured interdisciplinary funding streams:

Impact and Innovation: -

Societal & Strategic Contributions:

These directly align with Pakistan’s strategic priorities and demonstrate measurable technology transfer and societal impact.

Rankings and Recognition: -

Direct Institutional Evidence: Explicitly stated in the official Air University Framework for Interdisciplinary Science Research (2026) document, reviewed and endorsed by senior leadership.

Supporting Public Recognition:

Internal Recognition: Faculty promotions and appointments give explicit qualitative weightage to interdisciplinary contributions; annual faculty awards for cross-disciplinary work.

Student Involvement: IRC conducts regular hands-on training courses and real-world projects for undergraduate, master’s, and PhD students. Students participate in industry-collaborative initiatives (tele-health, solar purification, robotics) and Technology Outreach Lab community projects.

Faculty Awards & Recognition: Annual awards for cross-disciplinary excellence; qualitative impact statements (mentorship, collaborative grants, societal contributions) are core to promotion criteria.

Annual Research Output Reviews: Conducted by QEC with ORIC support. Real-time dashboards track:

Physical Infrastructure for Interdisciplinary Teams: -

Dedicated shared facilities across seven campuses (Islamabad Main, H-11, Kamra, Multan, Kharian, Karachi, Bahu Shorkot) are allocated through the Office of Research, Innovation & Commercialization (ORIC):

These labs enable joint experiments such as AI-driven avionics systems and cybersecurity-enhanced aerospace platforms. Additional innovation hubs and simulation rooms support collaborative teams of faculty, PhD scholars, and industry partners.

  1. Administrative & Policy Support: -

Recognition in Tenure, Promotion & Appointments: -

Air University’s promotion policy is qualitatively driven and explicitly values interdisciplinary contributions:

“Air University gives due weightage to interdisciplinary science research contributions at the time of promotion and appointment of faculty, which is qualitatively based.”

Evaluation criteria include:

Peer reviews and narrative impact statements carry equal weight to traditional metrics, fully aligned with HEC guidelines.

5. The Interdisciplinary Research Centre (IRC) – Operational Engine of Collaboration: -

Established 17 December 2007, the IRC bridges academia and industry through technology mediation.

Mission: To deliver projects within time, cost, and quality while reducing the theory-practice gap.
